BETCHWORTH PARISH COUNCIL BIOGRAPHIES


Councillor Ian Wilson Chairman Ian Wilson has lived in Betchworth for 26 years. He is passionate about his family and friends, education, the environment, the community he lives in…and his garden. He taught science in Surrey for 37 years and is now embarking in a new career as a science educational consultant. “Being a Parish Councillor (since May 1987) can be blood, sweat, tears, fun...and very rewarding”.

Councillor Tony Innes V-chairman Tony Innes has been a resident of Betchworth for 44 years and is married to Belinda, with two grown-up children, After a career in the furnishing industry that required extensive travel to the Middle East, Tony became involved in various local causes. He joined the Parish Council in 1997 and was a founder-member of Betchworth Quarry Action Group, and is the Parish Council representative on the committee of Betchworth & Buckland Society and on the CAMEL liaison group.

Councillor Jean Hurman Councillor Jean Hurman Has lived in Betchworth for 25 years. Married to Trevor with one son, she joined the Council in May 1999 with particular interests in the Burial Ground, Allotments and Village Hall. Jean is booking manager for the Village Hall and looks after it with Trevor's help.

Councillor Martin Higgins Councillor Martin Higgins was brought up in Brockham but moved to Betchworth in 1992. His three children attended first Acorns and then Brockham School. Past roles in support of the community include involvement with the children's nursery, school governor, the church, the Golden Jubilee celebrations and the parish plan. Passions include the natural environment, old buildings, bellringing and gardening. His biggest hate is the incremental urbanisation of the countryside.


Councillor Julie Hardy Councillor Julie Hardy Married to Charles, they have three sons and have lived in Betchworth for 15 years. Julie joined the Parish Council in October 2004. She is the Parish Councillor on the Children’s Holiday Activities and has a particular interest in health issues.

Councillor John Chalker Councillor John Chalker A Councillor since 2006, he has lived in Betchworth for 18 years with wife Sarah, who is editor of the Parish Magazine. Their two children both attended the village school.  He is director of a design company specialising in hotels and has recently moved his office to Leatherhead.  John is on the Finance Committee.

Councillor Sally Stimpson Councillor Sally Stimpson This is her first year as a Betchworth Parish Councillor. She has lived in Betchworth for the past 6 years with her husband Colin and their children Jack and Chloe. She was brought up in Bookham and after getting married moved to Los Angeles where Colin was working with Disney Feature Animation. Jack and Chloe have been to Betchworth Nursery and Acorns School, and she now works part time as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner specializing in Pediatrics at East Surrey Hospital. She finds Betchworth a lovely village and is determined to do all she can to keep it that way.

Clerk Bernard Hawkins Clerk, Bernard Hawkins A retired electrical power engineer (railways and National Grid), and an enthusiastic bellringer who has rung at Betchworth for 40 years. Married to Barbara with two grown up daughters, one in Portsmouth and the other in Australia. He Is only the sixth Parish Clerk since the Council began in 1894.
